Best Dogs for Kids

Making the decision to add a new furry member to your family is super exciting but can also be intimidating. We’ve compiled a list of the best dogs for kids and families so that you can confidently welcome the newest member of your pack.

We’re back and we’re helping tackle the question “What are some of the best dogs for kids and families?” We’ve compiled a list of top dog breeds for kids and families so that you can confidently welcome the newest member of your pack.

Making the decision to add a new furry member to your family is super exciting but can also be intimidating.  With such a wide variety of breeds, each with their own unique characteristics, making the best decision for your family can prove to be a challenge! If space is an added challenge for you, you may enjoy this post.

Three major factors you should consider when choosing a family pet are temperament, size, and energy level.  Temperament, or personality, of a dog along with its energy level, are both factors that should be considered in relation to a dog’s size.  In other words, smaller dogs may seem to be more energetic than larger dogs at times but may not be able to keep up on long walks due to their small size.  In contrast, larger dogs are more likely to keep up with your family’s hiking trip and continuous games of fetch despite their calmer demeanor during times of rest.

As you compare the following breeds, keep the following questions in mind:

  • Is size a factor for my family or my current home? Having ample space for your dog’s rest and play and comfort for the other members of your family is a must!
  • Are there any current family members – furry or not – that will be negatively affected by selecting this breed? Consider breeds that get along well with other pets, those that do not cause health concerns such as allergies for those who may suffer currently, and dogs that get along well with all age groups in your family.
  • Does this dog require special care? Some breeds require special grooming or medical attention and may need a little extra TLC.

Drum roll, please…. Let’s find your perfect pup! Here is a list of some (obviously not all) of the most popular dogs for families with kids.

Labrador Retriever

Best Breeds for Families: Lab Retriever

According to Reader’s Digest, despite their large size, Labrador Retrievers are super kid-friendly! They’re gentle with the perfect dose of playfulness and make the perfect addition to any family who spends a lot of quality time outdoors and on the go. Clearly one of the best dog breeds for kids.

Beagle

Best Dogs for Kids: Beagle

The American Kennel Club (AKC) says that “Beagles are loving and lovable, happy, and companionable—all qualities that make them excellent family dogs.” Oh, and did we mention how completely adorable they are? They’ll love your company just as much as you will cherish theirs!

French Bulldog

Best Dogs for Kids: Frenchie

Frenchies are known for their playful spirit and their ability to thrive in small spaces. If you live in a small apartment or home, you can count on this guy to make a great option.  Not only are they perfect pups for children, but they’re exceptionally cute and so fun to be around!

Poodle

Best Breeds for Families: Poodles

Looking for a furry friend that’s intelligent, mild-mannered, and customizable in size? You might just need to set your sights on the Poodle!  Not only can you find a poodle in the perfect size – from miniature to standard – but you can rely on very minimal shedding which is perfect for those with allergies.  While they may require a bit more grooming and coat care than some other breeds, making a poodle a part of your family is a decision you’re unlikely to regret.

Golden Retriever

Best Dogs for Kids: Golden Retriever

Earning the top spot according to PetMD, “The Golden Retriever is a confident, smart, kind, and loyal dog. Neither aggressive nor timid, the Golden Retriever is extremely patient, which makes them a perfect match for kids.”  These sweet guys and gals are always game for a lazy day indoors or a day full of fun in nature and are sure to add joy to the day no matter what’s on the agenda, making them some of the best dogs for kids.

And last but not least… Rescue Dogs

Despite a dog’s history, there’s still an awesome chance that a rescue dog will prove to be just as loving, patient, and loyal as any other pure-breed dog! In choosing a rescue dog, most shelters will allow you and your family time to meet with the furry friend you’re considering and often times will allow a trial foster period to ensure a perfect fit.
