Top Dog-Friendly Activities in Birmingham, Alabama

If you’re journeying to Birmingham with your pup, worry not because there are a ton of dog-friendly activities to enjoy! Of course, there are plenty of restaurants that accommodate dogs. Apart from walking around the city and enjoying the upbeat city energy, here is a list of other dog-friendly activities to explore during your stay in Birmingham.

The Market at Pepper Place

The Market at Pepper Place is a great collaboration with local farmers and vendors to create a flea market. This farmers market makes fresh produce more accessible and offers support to the local community. The market is outdoors and is open on Saturdays. It is a great place to venture with your pup to learn more about the local agricultural community. Plus, who doesn’t love fresh, in-season produce? 

Hollywood Feed

If you’re looking for a great pet supply store, look no further. What makes Hollywood Feed different is that it is a holistic and natural store. They have a knowledgeable staff base that is excited to explain what makes their products a step up above the rest. This store is a great way to introduce your pet to what Birmingham has to offer. 

Ruffner Mountain

This gem of a park offers 11 miles of beautiful trails and is pet-friendly. All dogs must be kept on a leash and must be picked up after. Ruffner Mountain offers wetlands and quarries to explore. This park has various trails, both long and short, and accommodates all difficulty levels. Take a day to enjoy Ruffner Mountain Park or spend the evening lounging at one of the picnic tables. 

Red Mountain Park-Remy’s Dog Park

Red Mountain Park originated at the heart of Birmingham. It is full of history that can be explored throughout the trails. The park sits on 1,500 acres of land and offers over 15 miles of hiking trails. They are dog-friendly. The park also has three treehouses to explore as well as a few city overlooks. Red Mountain Park is also home to Remy’s Dog Park (reopening in the spring after reseeding). They offer 6 acres of off-leash space for dogs to roam and explore. They have three separate areas for large, small, and also special needs dogs. 

Railroad Park

Railroad Park is a 19-acre plot of land that sits in the heart of downtown Birmingham. Of the 19 acres, 9 of them are open-lawn great for some puppy exercise. Explore the history of Birmingham through the walking trails. Many of the park benches and walls are made out of bricks that were unearthed during construction. The park is also a venue for multiple city-wide events. Additionally, there are exercise areas and skate parks. 

Vulcan Trail

The Vulcan Trail is a mile-long walking path that is part of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. This trail is relatively flat but offers a look up at the 1,025-foot Red Mountain. Vulcan Trail is another feature of Birmingham that is full of history. The path itself follows the L&N Birmingham Mineral Railroad and offers overlooks to some of the cities most outstanding historical buildings. As the trail is relatively short, it’s an excellent stop for a relaxing evening with the pup after a long day of exploring. 

Moss Rock Preserve

Moss Rock Preserve is over 349 acres in size and offers 12 miles of hiking trails. It is here that the Little River Canyon Sandstone Glade can be observed. Rock climbers favor the rock formations here in the area. This preserve is an excellent getaway from the urban city and puts you back in nature. Dogs love it for the small streams that flow throughout. 

Turkey Creek Nature Preserve

As the name suggests, Turkey Creek Nature Preserve is great for any dogs that love wadding around in the water. This place is a haven for three endangered species of fish. If the water is not enticing, the preserve offers a five-mile trail system. Swimming here is not only limited to dogs. The creek is excellent for a quick dip. If you have a smaller dog, be sure to watch for deeper areas and stronger currents.
